Norwegian kveik yeast may soon change the face of craft beer. Come taste the future!

ODM partner Chris Cohen is 100% convinced that Norwegian kveik yeast strains are soon to be adopted en mass and will change the face of American craft beer in the coming years. Chris visited Norway in late 2018 to attend the Norsk Kørnolfestival, a tiny kveik festival in Hornindal, an out of the way town in northern Norway, to learn more about kveik and experience the flavors of Maltøl (traditional Norwegian farmhouse ales). There's a lot of excitement in the scene about the promise of kveik yeast strains, but not a lot of knowledge or understanding about what it is, how to use them, or even how to pronounce it (sort of like "kwiyk" or "quake"). Chris is excited to share some of his discoveries with you!

If you want to taste the future of craft beer, come to ODM's Kveiking Raid and sample the goods! We've collected a selection of ales fermented with kveik yeast strains to share with you. You'll be able to taste TWO traditional Norwegian farmhouse ales, TWO Bay Area kveik fermented collabs Chris helped create for the event, as well as SIX modern craft beers and a cider fermented with kveik. That's TEN kveik fermented beers, the most ever offered in one place in the USA.

~~ Some basic kveik info: There are many types of Kviek. It's a variety of yeast blends, each town (or even brewer!) in Norway has a different blend. They've have been passed down through generations and are used by Norwegian farmhouse brewers to make traditional Norwegian ales called maltøl. These are real "farmhouse" brewers, Saison Dupont this is not. The traditional versions of Norwegian Farmhouse ales are often unboiled "raw ales," they're typically made with juniper, and are sometimes smokey depending on the Norwegian town the malt comes from. These beers are typically fermented at temperatures unheard of with the typical brewer's yeasts used all over the world, upwards of 100F!

~~ Chris will be on hand to drop a bit of knowledge about kveik and talk about his recent experience in Norway. He'll also bring a kveik ring, traditional Norwegian ølbollen (ale bowls), and real living dried kveik from Hornindal that he snagged on his trip to Norway to show to those who are interested.

~~ Almanac Beer Co's Brewmaster, Phil Emerson, and owner, Damian Fagan, who have been experimenting with Kviek fermentations and did a recent kveik collab beer with Chris, will be on hand to talk about their experience with kveik at a commercial level.
