Opening Gala Highlights

Can you believe we made 10 years? It’s a big birthday and we’re ready to party.

Of course, it all starts with the SF Beer Week Opening Gala, when 125 breweries will convene this year to mix and mingle, and where rarities and cult classics will be showcased, one-offs and brewery collaboration beers released, and exciting new beers — and new brewers — both debut.

Perhaps the biggest highlight is the amazing list of beers being tapped at this year’s Gala. Included in that massive list are collaborations — 10 of which are official SF Beer Week collaborations and which brought together independent craft breweries from every corner of the region.

But that’s not all… In celebration of SF Beer Week’s 10th year, the founders will reconvene at the Gala for the traditional community toast, led by beer writer Jay Brooks. All attendees are invited to join Brooks and his fellow Beer Week conspirators: Celebrator Beer News publisher Tom Dalldorf, Magnolia Brewing Co. Founder Dave McLean, Beer Chef Bruce Paton and 21st Amendment Brewery Co-Founder Shaun O’Sullivan, along with Toronado Pub owner Dave Keene and Vic Krajl, proprietor of The Bistro in Hayward.

These legendary figures in the Bay Area’s craft community — whose marquee February events laid the groundwork for SF Beer Week — will hoist their glasses at 7:15 pm at the Gala’s main stage.

This year, too, the Opening Gala adds an exciting new element, Bay Area Brewer Talks, co-presented with the San Francisco Chronicle and SFGATE. Brewers will take the stage to share stories, talk ingredients and styles, and take stock of a changing craft beer landscape. In three segments – Secrets of Malt, Women and Beer and Sours Take Center Stage – journalists will lead conversations with the inventive personalities that make the magic happen in the vibrant craft beer community. Bay Area Brewer Talks immediately follows the SF Beer Week community toast and is open to all Opening Gala attendees.

Featuring: Admiral Maltings, Armistice Brewing, Drake’s Brewing Co., Mad Fritz Brewing, Humble Sea Brewing and The Rare Barrel.
