Our annual "Iron Brewer Competition" challenges homebrewers to brew beers using specifically assigned ingredients or to hit a target of inspiration - think of the "Iron Chef" TV show and you're on track. After two rounds of blind and public judging, we then brew a commercial scale batch with the winning homebrewers to feature during SFBW. This year, we laid down the challenge to 40 homebrewers to create beer versions of mini cupcakes provided by Mission Minis.

For this event, you'll get to taste the inspiration Swiss Almond Coconut cupcake, alongside "Cupcake Reincarnate" - the scaled up version of the winning beer brewed by Terence Tse and Peter Bergstrom. From cupcake inspiration to the glass, you'll get to taste firsthand how the toasty almond and coconut notes of the cupcake shine through in the malty smooth beer. The winning brewers will also be on hand to geek out and talk about their process and decisions for making a beer version of the cupcake so deliciously drinkable.

Starting at 7:30, we'll also have LIVE MUSIC with Sidewinder, presenting a night dedicated to the iconic performances that defined Blue Note Records' mission, "simply to serve the uncompromising expression of hot jazz and swing."

Sidewinder features members of the house band at Savanna Jazz's Sunday's Cool jam session and San Francisco's own Legends & Friends. They'll be doing a retrospective of the great Blue Note recordings. Herbie Hancock to Horace Silver, Art Blakey to (of course) Lee Morgan.

Come out Saturday and enjoy cupcakes, beer, and great music!

Inspired by the Swiss Almond Coconut cupcake from Mission Minis, this beer features a pilsner malt base with flaked oats, biscuit and victory malts to provide a grainy, toasty, biscuity base on which we layered almond and coconut flavors to replicate the cupcake. Lactose in the boil provides for a fuller body and slight sweetness in the finish, without being cloying, and Columbus (CTZ) hops provide just enough bitterness to keep the sweetness in check along with citrus notes that help the coconut and almond shine.
